Proceeding of the workshop Culture at school

The activity begins with a brief geographical and historical introduction to the West Indies.
The workshop is adapted according to the age of the students and takes place in a circle. The main basic drum sounds are then presented and repeated. By also introducing some simple rhythms and accompaniments, the student is invited to identify the different sounds on the drum. The teaching is done by mimicry and metaphor since we are in the oral tradition. I introduce the main fundamentals of body percussion and recycled or invented percussion.

We repeat a few basic rhythms several times and then we start after a few simple instructions, games and improvisation exercises. Depending on the ability of each participant to play the drum, accessories, body percussion and recycled we try to create a musical piece together.

At the end of the workshop, each student leaves with a glossary on the terminology of the main instruments and rhythms of the West Indies with the scores, if necessary. This program has been presented in more than 150 schools in Quebec!

Sound and Rhythm Interactive and Therapeutic

Sound and Rhythm is a musical activity whose objective is to provide an interactive experience for a group of people with percussion.

Participants are placed in a circle in a safe and welcoming environment. Everyone gets involved in playing percussion together in order to promote the unity of the group. The emphasis is not on performance, but I focus on the development and well-being of the group.

By incorporating exercise into play, I try to integrate the body and the brain by stimulating the visual, auditory and tactile systems. I emphasize rhythm and balance. Participants can improve their motor coordination and body awareness.

With instruments adapted to the clientele (frame drum, djembes, small percussions that one strings, shakes or strikes with the stick or the hand), the percussion has the advantage of being accessible to everyone.

It is also an opportunity to create a place of positive belonging in addition to being a space of expression where the means of communication is other than speaking. The workshop promotes self-esteem, listening, concentration, memory, cooperation and self-confidence while developing new skills in the individual. Interactive percussion also helps break down isolation and reduce stress and anxiety. This program is prepared for ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity Disorder) classes in schools and community centers that help people living with an intellectual disability. Sound and Rhythm also supports people with emotional and psychological difficulties.
